Oscar De La Hoya was quick to remind Canelo Alvarez that he ‘got schooled’ by Floyd Mayweather after his win against Jaime Munguia.

The Mexican superstar was in fine form on Saturday night as he outboxed Munguia over the distance.

Despite a spirited display from the Tijuana puncher, it wasn’t enough to overcome the former pound-for-pound king as he was dropped en route to a unanimous decision defeat.

De La Hoya, who promotes Munguia, has been embroiled in a bitter feud with Canelo throughout the build-up.

The pair recently confronted each other in a furious altercation at the final press conference on Wednesday and have continued to trade verbal jabs.

De La Hoya threatened to take legal action against his former client after the Mexican superstar alleged he had stolen money from his fighters.

This came after De La Hoya told Canelo to ‘put some f***ing respect’ on his name for building his career.

Although ‘Golden Boy’ wasn’t quite as crude with his remarks in the post-fight press conference following Canelo vs Munguia, he still couldn’t help but take a subtle dig at his fierce rival by mentioning the Mayweather fight.

“I thought Jaime did excellent against the current face of boxing right now,” De La Hoya said.

“I take nothing away from Canelo, I’ve always said he is good fighter in the ring.

“But this experience for Jaime will take him to a new level.

“It’s just like Mayweather and Canelo, same thing. Canelo got schooled then he became the face of boxing, a good fighter.

“Same thing with Munguia, he didn’t get schooled but he gains experience and becomes a better fighter so this is just the beginning for Jaime.”

Canelo, aged just 23, suffered the first defeat of his career to Mayweather in 2013 via majority decision.

Judge C.J. Ross somehow scored the fight a draw but, in reality, it was hard to make a case for Canelo winning more than two rounds.

The defeat would spark a dramatic rise for Canelo, who went on to become a four-weight world champion and undisputed super-middleweight king.
