Blues slammed for “embarrassing” lack of pressure and intent in Crows defeat

Port Adelaide 300-gamer Kane Cornes was bitterly disappointed by Carlton’s pressure and intent in their 29-point loss to Adelaide on Saturday night. While the blues entered the game as hot favourites, it was the Crows who looked the better side throughout as they got on top of their opponents both physically and on the scoreboard. Considering Carlton had everything to play for as they’re still in the midst of a finals push, Cornes was shocked to see their poor effort level against an Adelaide side who was purely playing for pride. “It was such a bitterly disappointing loss for Carlton,” Cornes said on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show. “You’ve got the coach who’s one of the toughest players to ever play the game and they’ve relied on toughness all year to get them into the position they’re in. “Then they go to Adelaide against the youngest team in the competition and serve up more missed tackles than I think I’ve ever seen in a game of football. “I sat upstairs for half an hour looking at missed tackles, there were 20 or 30 missed tackles, this is embarrassing against the youngest team in the competition.” Cornes went on to point out several missed tackle opportunities from the Blues which resulted in Crows goals, vision he expects to be shown on repeat at Ikon Park this week. “(Patrick) Cripps on (Will) Hamill, missed tackle, walking through here was (Taylor) Walker who’s not known for his toughness just brushing off Patrick Cripps,” Cornes said. “It was time after time after time, they’re going sit through a review on Monday and say, ‘How can we miss tackles like that and give Adelaide second and third opportunities’. “(Adam) Saad on (Wayne) Milera, he played 10 games in the SANFL earlier this year and he just brushed past them. “Then look at (Darcy) Fogarty, that’s one missed tackle from (Lachie) Plowman who I’m not sure how he gets a game, then there’s (Lochie) O’Brien who misses that which is embarrassing again and then there’s three (Adam) Cerra is brushed off for a goal. “It is physically a really disappointing performance from a Carlton side who we have admired their toughness this year.” Following the loss, Carlton holds a 12-7 record and sit in seventh spot, with a top-four berth unlikely unless they go flawless for the rest of the season. The Blues face a tough run home with Brisbane away next Sunday at the Gabba before they meet with top four hopefuls Melbourne and Collingwood in Rounds 22 and 23 respectively. "Against the youngest team in the competition, they served up more missed tackles than I think I've ever seen in a game of football." 😲@kanecornes calls out the 'embarrassing' tackling display from the Blues in their loss to the Crows. #9AFLSFS | Watch on @Channel9 pic.twitter.com/L9d2mKkSNL— Footy on Nine (@FootyonNine) July 31, 2022
