The official MCU debut of Hugh Jackman in Deadpool and Wolverine became one of the biggest selling points of the film when it was announced by co-star Ryan Reynolds in 2022. According to Kevin Feige, though, it was not always a guarantee as the Marvel Studios head revealed he initially felt very different about Jackman picking up the adamantium claws for one more go-around as Wolverine.

Feige, alongside Jackman and Reynolds, spoke at length about the upcoming MCU film when the Marvel Studios president told Empire, via IGN, that at first he was against Jackman returning as Wolverine. He said Jackman had what could be considered the greatest send-off for his time in the role with Logan and it should be left alone.

“I said, ‘Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don't come back’,” Feige told the outlet. “‘You had the greatest ending in history with Logan. That's not something we should undo.'”

Jackman added that he initially agreed with Feige’s sentiment, but ultimately felt the chance to work alongside Reynolds’ Deadpool was too good to pass up. The actor said that he “couldn’t stop thinking about it” once it was on his mind and that it was cemented after calling and speaking with Reynolds, directly.

Feige would ultimately relent, with him previously stating how excited he was to see everything come “full circle” for himself and Jackman after working together on the first X-Men film in 2000.

“For [Jackman], and for me, and I think for all of the fans of Marvel, it’s unbelievable what has happened in 23 years… to have Hugh come back is incredible. For me, personally, that is where I started,” Feige told Entertainment Weekly in February 2023.

However, Feige has also teased that the Wolverine that Jackman is playing this time around is not the one audiences have grown familiar with over his 20-year run as the character. It will, instead, be a Wolverine seemingly broken from something he was unable to stop in his universe and has carried that guilt ever since.

The second trailer for Deadpool and Wolverine reinforce Feige’s teases, with Matthew Macfadyen’s Paradox stating as much.

It Rhymes With “Pull-verine”

It is looking to be an equally hard time for Deadpool after the merc with a mouth is pulled from his universe by the Time Variance Authority and recruited for a mission that could change the MCU’s history. He will be aided by Wolverine in this mission, that’s if the two mutants don’t kill each other first.

Standing opposite the heroes will be the villainous Cassandra Nova, the twin sister to Charles Xavier who serves as the dark reflection of the X-Men’s founder. She appears to reside at the End of Time, the TVA’s former-dumping ground for pruned timelines, though has been teased to be a threat to the larger multiverse.

Deadpool and Wolverine is scheduled to release in theaters on July 26, 2024.
