Nick Saban makes subtle demand amid 'players getting paid'

College football today looks a lot different than it did back in the 2010s as players are now profiting off of their name, image and likeness. It was something that people wanted for a long time as schools were making millions off of these players, and now the players themselves are getting paid through NIL. However, everything hasn’t been perfect, and there are now a lot of people that have issues with how it is all being done. One of those people is former Alabama football head coach Nick Saban.

Nick Saban retired from coaching after this past season and he is no longer the head coach of the Alabama football team. There were a lot of things that contributed to Saban decisions to retire, but he did note that players asking for more money was one of those things. With the transfer portal being so popular as well, players can up and leave on a moments notice if they aren’t making enough money at a certain school. Saban wasn’t a fan of it.

Saban is on board with players getting paid, but he thinks that there is a better way to do it than how things are done now. Saban knows that something needs to change, or it could spell trouble for the future of college football.

“There's problems that have to be solved,” Saban said during a recent interview with Paul Finebaum, according to an article from USA Today. “There're lawsuits that have to be solved. Until we get all that in order, we're not gonna be able to have some kind of protocol of rules and who governs those rules, so we don't have litigation problems and we don't have Title IX issues moving forward. I'm for the players getting paid. I just want it to be a system where everybody has a competitive balance so we don't lose the spirit of college football.”

Paul Finebaum has a solution

Nick Saban is right, something does need to be done. At this rate, bigger schools with more resources are going to make the gap between them and smaller schools even bigger, and we are going to see the same teams dominate the college football landscape year in and out. A lot of people agree that there needs to be more rules and regulations surrounding NIL.

Paul Finebaum has an idea that could help the game, and his idea is that Saban should act as ‘czar’ of college football.

“I think the solution to college football is you need to quit wasting time being on TV and you need to be what everybody in my business has suggested,” Finebaum said. “You need to be the czar of college football. If you agree to that right now, we can solve a lot of problems.”

There would likely be a lot of people on board with Finebaum’s idea, especially when it comes to Alabama football fans. Saban likely has different plans for his retirement, but a solution does need to happen one way or the other.
