Nearly a year and a half after she returned to the United States after being imprisoned in Russia, WNBA star Brittney Griner is finally ready to talk about her experience.

In a recent conversation with Robin Roberts, Griner admitted she was forced to sleep on a blood-stained mattress. "The mattress had a huge blood stain on it, and they give you these thin two sheets," she said. "So you're basically laying on bars."

She revealed much more than that during the interview, which appears to be just the first of at least two in the coming days. On Thursday afternoon Griner revealed she spoke with the New York Times Magazine for an exclusive interview.

"I've read your concerns for me and appreciate the love shown! Hopefully i'll ease your worries on 5/7 because I'm really an open book now! Thank you so much, @nytmag, for helping me tell my story of COMING HOME. It's an honor," she said.

Griner expressed gratitude for her platform and the recent interviews she's conducted.

"It feels good to be in a place where I can let people into my experience of falling short, struggling to extend myself grace, and ultimately finding the mental fortitude to continue living for the better," Griner said.

"I also am forever grateful for the opportunity to give thanks to those who have been there for me and my family through this life-changing ordeal."

In addition to the interviews she's given, Griner is also working on a book titled "Coming Home," which dives deeper into her nine-month prison stint.
