Tigers 6, Twins 5: Grand slams all around

Photo by David Berding/Getty Images Both teams’ catchers hit grand slams today, so that’s pretty cool. Mitch Garver got the game off to a great start with a grand slam in the 1st inning, giving Kenta Maeda a 4-0 lead. Former Twins prospect Akil Baddoo got the Tigers on the board with a solo homer in the 3rd inning. Willians Astudillo answered with a solo blast of his own in the 4th, making it a 5-1 game. Maeda looked very sharp tonight, at one point retiring 10 batters in a row. He ran into some trouble in the 7th, so Tyler Duffey was brought in and got a double play to get the Twins out of a jam. Danny Coulombe picked up a couple outs in the 8th to strand another Detroit baserunner. Hansel Robles was brought in to close the game and it went entirely smoothly in our favor. Just kidding, he actually allowed a Robbie Grossman single and then Miguel Cabrera doubled to put Robbie on 3rd. Jeimer Candelario walked to fill the bases. Eric Haase then pushed one over the right field wall to tie the game at 5. This is just life as a Twins fan in 2021. They didn’t take the lead though, so we have Manfredball. In the bottom of the 10th the Twins got Jorge Polanco to 3rd on a ground out, Josh Donaldson was walked, then Garver was hit by a pitch to load the bases with 1 out. Garver was injured by that (of course) and had to be pinch run for by Ryan Jeffers. Max Kepler and Miguel Sano struck out to end the threat. In the top of the 11th, Cabrera singled up the middle to score Jonathan Schoop. That was the first run of the game that didn’t come from a homer. The Twins couldn’t answer in the bottom half, giving us the final score of 6-5. The grand slam giveth and the grand slam taketh away.
