New acquisition Michael Tonkin ends up in tough spot in debut; rehab games on the horizon for Jasson Domínguez?; Trent Grisham finally gets into the hit column; Derek Jeter still means a lot to shortstops of today.

MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: Newly acquired reliever Michael Tonkin was put in a tough spot for the Yankees on Friday night, as he was sent out for the both the 10th and 11th innings, and he ended up getting dinged with both a blown save and a loss. Going to Tonkin was also a bit of a confounding move, as closer Clay Holmes had just thrown a fairly impressive ninth inning. Manager Aaron Boone said that he went away from Holmes because the closer in on pace to appear in 80 games this season and he doesn't want to overwork him. To editorialize a bit, it is hard to question that particular explanation, but it's done now.

New York Post | Greg Joyce: Jasson Domínguez's call-up and performance last season was one of the most exciting parts of a disappointing 2023, and it was sadly cut short when he had to undergo Tommy John surgery. Thankfully recovery is not quite as long for that for position players as it is for pitcher, and "The Martian" seems to be making steady progress. On Friday, Aaron Boone said Domínguez was doing well and could be just a few weeks away from taking part in rehab games.

New York Post | Greg Joyce: While it ended up coming in a losing effort, Trent Grisham finally notched his first Yankee hit on Friday. It came in a big was, as his three-run homer came with the Yankees trailing 4-2 and gave them a lead, which they took into the late innings. Grisham admitted that going to more of a bench role this year has been a big change for him, and it's taken some time to get used to.

MLB.com | Martín Gallegos: We may now be a decade out from Derek Jeter's final season as a player, but his presence still means a lot to some players of today. When the Athletics were in Yankee Stadium earlier this week, Oakland shortstop Max Schuemann took a great deal of meaning out of manning the spot that Jeter used to. Like Jeter, Schuemann was a Kalamazoo, MI native, and idolized the Yankee legend growing up.
