Two years after world No. 3 Jessica Pegula eased past Elisabetta Cocciaretto in straight sets at Wimbledon, the Italian returned the favor to spring a major upset.
Cocciaretto played all-out aggressive tennis for the duration of a 6-2, 6-3 win, taking the ball impossibly early time and time again. Pegula, who won the Bad Homburg title in Germany last week and had a quick turnaround into the third Grand Slam of the year, looked at a loss to quell the Italian’s attack.
Seemingly everything she threw at Cocciaretto came back with interest, and the Italian world No. 116 occupied the baseline...
