A furious Canelo Alvarez went to confront Oscar De La Hoya, later branding him a ‘f****** a******’ during a fiery press conference.

On Wednesday night, Canelo reacted angrily to comments made by De La Hoya, who represents the Mexican fighter’s next opponent, Jaime Munguia, ahead of their Cinco de Mayo clash.

De la Hoya, who used to be in charge of Canelo’s career before they split, savaged his former star by claiming he made him who he is before accusing him of failing two drug tests.

He said: “Golden Boy Promotions built Canelo Alvarez, the company you fought under for decades has always had one name, and it’s mine, so put some f******respect on it.

"Jaime has always dared to be great. This is full circle for him. When he was 21 he volunteered to step in against GGG and Canelo failed two drugs test. Jaime wasn't allowed to fulfil his dream in 2018, and Saturday he will do that and be world champion."

That prompted the 33-year-old to get up and confront the Golden Boy chief with security having to stand in between the two once-friends.

Canelo lambasted De La Hoya in Spanish before he took his turn on the microphone, ripping into the 11-time world champion.

“I said he’s a f***ing a******,” a seething Canelo exclaimed. “He tried to keep the attention on him, not for Munguia.

“He steals from his fighters, that’s what he does. F****** p****. Motherf*****.

“He’s mad I left Golden Boy. I’m the diamond in Golden Boy. Golden Boy is not the same without me… I don’t really give a s*** about Oscar, but if he says something in my territory, I need to say something.”

Canelo is set to defend his undisputed super-middleweight titles against Munguia on May 4 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

It is the first time that the Mexican superstar has faced one of De La Hoya’s fighters since his acrimonious split from Golden Boy Promotions in 2020.

De La Hoya had already stirred the pot before the press conference by insisting that Canelo’s time in the sun is over.

Speaking about Munguia, the 51-year-old said: "He is ready right now. He is positioned right now. This is his moment. This could be the changing of the guard on Cinco de Mayo.

"It's all about footwork because you have a guy [Canelo], who is 33, and you have a younger guy [Munguia].

“So, obviously, his legs are fresher. He can take a punch better, although Canelo does have a good chin.

“But when you have all that wear and tear under your belts, the armour tends to bend a little at that stage.”

While somewhat a relative unknown, Munguia has earned his shot against Canelo with wins over Sergiy Derevyanchenko and John Ryder, as well as holding the WBO title at light-middleweight.

"I'm very, very happy and filled with enthusiasm for this great opportunity," stated Munguia.

"I'm incredibly grateful to everyone involved who were able to make this fight a reality.

“We are ready to give fans a great night of boxing on Saturday, May 4. I can't wait to demonstrate to the world that I am capable of doing great things. Viva Tijuana and Viva Mexico!"
