'I was unstoppable' – George Groves claims he would've beaten Canelo Alvarez and explains how

George Groves has revealed his belief that he would have beaten Canelo Alvarez if they ever met in the ring.

Former WBA super-middleweight world champion Groves held a record of 28-4 during a career that featured various high-profile bouts.

He fought fellow stars including Carl Froch and Chris Eubank Jr before announcing his retirement in 2019.

However, one name he didn’t face was Alvarez, who currently dominates the super-middleweight division.

The Mexican has held the WBA, WBC and Ring magazine titles since 2020 and remains the undisputed king with the IBF and WBO titles since 2021.

Despite such immense success, Groves believes he would have beaten Alvarez and explained how he would’ve claimed such a victory.

Speaking to Grosvenor Casinos, he said: “I was unstoppable at super middleweight, you can’t deny Canelo is a force, but [Dmitry] Bivol showed you a blueprint on how to beat him.

"You can’t go in there and be reckless, you’d have to be measured like Bivol was.

"I was good with my feet, good with my straight shots and I wouldn’t let Canelo close the distance and I wouldn’t linger on the ropes and it would have been my hardest fight if it had happened, but there’s no way I would not have dealt Canelo a loss."

Alvarez’s fight against Bivol was just one of two defeats he has suffered in his 64-fight professional career.

The 33-year-old lost via unanimous decision against the Russian in 2022 but has since responded with three consecutive wins.

Alvarez last entered the ring in September with a victory against Jermell Charlo, with the boxing giant still holding onto his titles.

Former fighter Groves called time on boxing following his KO defeat to Callum Smith that saw him lose his WBA super-middleweight title.

He has therefore not returned to the ring since but has been involved in a feud with MMA star Conor McGregor, who believes he would beat him and Carl Froch at the same time in a UFC fight.
