The Dallas Cowboys released Ezekiel Elliott last offseason in a move to save money against the salary cap. There weren't any hard feelings about the split, and some theorized that Dallas would elect to bring Elliott back on a cheaper deal.

Elliott signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots, and with the team firmly in a rebuild, he's looking for a new home.

One reporter says that the reunion some fans hoped for last year is finally about to happen, and that Elliott will be making his way back to the team.

According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, Elliott joining the Cowboys for the 2024 season is "increasingly imminent."

Gehlken says that even if the Cowboys draft a running back, it doesn't change the likelihood of Elliott coming back.

He says that if they take a new running back this weekend, Elliott would be there to mentor the rookie as they enter the league.

Elliott had spent his entire career with the Cowboys prior to the 2023 season.

Dallas drafted him with the No. 4 overall pick back in 2016 - the same year Dak Prescott was drafted - and he became an All-Pro talent.

Elliott led the NFL in rushing yards twice with the Cowboys, but he hasn't rushed for over 1,000 yards since 2021.

With Tony Pollard now in Tennessee, the Cowboys could draft another running back to complement Elliott.

The tandem approach worked well for Dallas in 2022, as Elliott took care of short yardage situations.

The Cowboys struggled with converting on short third and fourth downs last season, and having Elliott back to specialize in that role could be a big addition.
